We went to the beach for Labor Day week and stayed at Gigi's house. It was so nice to be right on the beach so that Caroline could come and go as she pleased. She really enjoyed the water and the sand. She actually swam quite a bit in the ocean with her floatie on when the water was calm. At the beginning of the trip, she wanted to hold onto on of us while she swam. But after a few days, she would push your hands away and say "all by herself" and swim without any help. She loved looking for fish in the water, burying her feet in the sand and then kicking them out, and playing in the "pit" that Daddy dug out in the sand. She also went for a few very long walks, exploring everything around her, including the neighbors deck that had ceilings fans on it, which fascinated her for some reason. She would ask to "see the ceiling fan" and off she would go down the beach. On the last day of the trip, there were some decent sized waves and a lot of people came out to surf. She watched them and said "Caroline go surfing" and I'm sure she would have if we had let her.
Catherine did get to venture down to the sand once or twice on a couple of overcast days. The sun and sand were just too bright for her sensitive eyes. She did spend a lot of time outside on the deck, looking at the sea oats blowing in the wind, and she really enjoyed watching the ceiling fan while swinging in the atrium swing. Catherine did prove to be a much better car traveller than her sister on her first trip to the beach (you may remember that Caroline cried most of the trip down and ALL of the trip home the first time we took her!)
We had a great trip. Can't wait to go back!

Roly Poly
Catherine rolled from her back to her tummy for the first time yesterday, which just happened to be her 16 week birthday. I was changing Caroline's diaper, and Catherine was on the play gym mat when she started to fuss. I looked over and she was on her tummy, but with her right arm stuck under her, which was making her mad. She freed her arm just as Caroline and I came over, and looked around with a big smile. Then she rolled right back onto her back. This was actually the first time she had rolled either direction. I had expected the back to tummy roll to come soon, as she has been rolling on her side quite a bit over past couple of weeks. And this week, she has been trying to roll onto her tummy in her crib when I put her to bed at night (I can see her one the video monitor). It has really disturbed her sleep for the first couple of hours of the night.
I looked at Caroline's baby book to see when she rolled. She went tummy to back at 7 weeks and then back to tummy at 14 weeks, so a little earlier than Catherine. I think one of the reasons Catherine rolled later is that she has not had as much floor time. With Caroline running and jumping all over the place, I have been less inclined to put Catherine on the floor out of fear of her being trampled by her sister.
A few other things of note about Catherine:
- She is sleeping from around 8 pm to 5 am with just a few wakings to give her her paci. She nurses around 5 and then goes back to sleep until 7:30- ish (most of the time, though, it takes her a good while to go back to sleep)
- I think she has a clogged tear duct in her left eye. It is producing lots of yellow-green goop on a daily basis. I did speak to a nurse about it and she said the tear duct was the likely problem. The eye itself is fine-- no redness and it doesn't seem to bother her. We go for her 4 month appt. in a couple of week and will have it checked out then.
- Took her for her 3 months photos and it went great. She was her usual smiley self and we got some great pictures. We finished in 30 minutes because she did so well!
- She has started grabbing at objects within her reach, like the turtle that hangs on her bouncy seat and at the mylar balloons form Caroline's birthday that she loves to look at.

Caroline Turns 2!!!!
Caroline turned 2 on August 28! On her birthday, we took her to the Discovery Museum, cooked her favorite dinner of grilled chicken (marinated in Dale's), broccoli, and brown rice, ate birthday cake and opened her presents from us. I made her cake, which was designed to look like her "fishy dress"-- her favorite dress that she asks to wear every day.
Her birthday party was the 29th. The theme was fish and we had backyard swimming and sprinklers, fish tattoos, and cupcakes with fish sprinkles. It was a blast! Caroline had so much fun that she was too tired to even open her presents.
